The Rumbach, a brook which played an integral part in the emergence of the city of Mülheim/Ruhr, today has completely disappeared from the cityscape, having been relocated to a large subterranean canal.
A live image of the brook flowing through the canal is transmitted to a monitor embedded in the ground of the pedestrian zone above it.
The history of the city and its stratification – actual yet invisible – is brought to the current surface in the manner of an endoscopy. At the same time the brook resurfaces as a phenomenon at once concurrent and constantly changing in colour, depth of water and flow velocity.
